For its exemplary record of leadership, service, and efforts to improve the school and community, the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) awarded Northern Middle School of Calvert County Public Schools the Chapter of Distinction Award.

Northern Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society is celebrating an exceptional year of service, leadership, and community impact, with members contributing an impressive 2,700+ hours of community service throughout Calvert County and beyond. From supporting schools, food pantries, youth programs, environmental initiatives, animal rescues, hospitals, and local charities to assembling and delivering 65 hygiene-filled “go bags” to Project ECHO, NJHS members turned their commitment to service into meaningful action for those in need.

Chapter officers also emerged as stronger, more confident leaders by planning and leading meetings, engaging members, and participating in leadership workshops focused on communication, advocacy, teamwork, and service. Northern Middle School’s NJHS members are setting the bar high for the next generation of student leaders, challenging them to expand student involvement, exceed this year’s service accomplishments, and continue making a lasting difference in their school and community.

“The NJHS Chapter of Distinction Award celebrates chapters that truly embody what the National Junior Honor Society stands for, students who don't just excel academically but actively strengthen their communities,” said National Principal Association (NPA) CEO Ronn Nozoe. “The Northern Middle School chapter demonstrates how powerful it can be when young leaders channel their talents toward meaningful service and positive change.”

“I am incredibly proud of what our NJHS members have accomplished this year. More than 2,700 hours of service represents so much more than a number, it represents thousands of moments when our students chose to give their time, talents, and energy to help others.

Watching them grow as leaders while making a genuine difference in our school and throughout the community has been truly inspiring. These students embody what NJHS is all about: scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship,” said Amanda Price, Northern Middle School NJHS Advisor.

“What an incredible accomplishment for our students and our school! As a new principal, I feel fortunate to step into a community with such a strong tradition of student leadership and service. I am so proud of what our NJHS members have accomplished and excited to see how they continue to build on this success in their pursuit of excellence,” said Dr. Cathy Sutton, Principal.

The NJHS Chapters of Distinction is a national recognition program created by NJHS to honor chapters that demonstrate strong leadership, sound operations, and a deep commitment to the pillars of the Honor Society. This distinction recognizes chapters that meet all Essential Standards and excel in key areas such as student governance and leadership development.
